Single Moms Planet’s Advisory Action Council represents a new step forward in SMP’s mission to bring critical resources to single mother families across the country. Our new Advisory Action Council brings together a compassionate community of local and national leaders to advocate for educational advancement and economic stability for single mother households. By offering trailblazing small business initiatives, leadership programs, financial literacy education, business development opportunities, child support assistance, and critical fundraising events, the Advisory Action Council will help break the cycle of poverty for single mother households and put single moms in a position to lift up themselves.

 

 

 

On Saturday, September 30, Single Moms Planet held the first event led by members of our new Advisory Action Council – the Advisory Action Council Mixer! Advocate, Sip & Shop! at Kendra Scott at El Segundo.

We used the event as an opportunity for our new Advisory Action Council members to mingle and talk about our vision for the future of Single Moms Planet.

The event was just the first of many where the Advisory Action Council will meet to plan a better path forward for our organization and for struggling single mother families throughout the United States.

Actress Sally Field recently opened up about her struggles as a single mom trying to afford childcare while working in the 1970s, despite her growing fame and success in Hollywood.

Field, who had starred in several TV sitcoms, couldn’t make ends meet and relied on her mother to take care of her two boys while she worked.

Field’s story highlights the ongoing financial challenges that many single mothers face today, with many unable to afford childcare and struggling to make ends meet for their families.

According to the Annie E. Casey Foundation, 30% of single parents live in poverty, with single mothers more likely to be poor than single dads.

LOS ANGELES – Whether it’s due to a breakup or the passing of a husband or partner, single motherhood is oftentimes something that a woman falls into. But it can also be a conscious decision that we may make, a new article from Cafemom.com says.

According to statistics cited on SingleMotherGuide.com, an estimated one in six children (or more than 12 million) are being raised by a single mom today. And of all single-parent families in the United States, single mothers make up the vast majority of these households.

Given those numbers, it’s fairly unsurprising that there are plenty of celebrity moms who also happen to be single parents themselves. Some have certainly experienced heartbreak over the years, finding news of their very public splits all over the covers of tabloids.

Others have been in off-and-on relationships — or found themselves expecting while their partner opted out of being involved. There are those who ended up confronting a partner who wasn’t on the same page with them when it came to having kids. And many famous women have enjoyed the single life for years, only to have epiphanies that motivated them to adopt.

Here are some truly inspiring celebrity moms who decided to fly solo as they embarked on the journey of motherhood. They’re undoubtedly examples of strong, independent women who have chosen single motherhood — and who, judging from many of their candid interviews, wouldn’t change it for the world.

Since news first broke that Mad Men star January Jones was expecting her first child, the actress has remained quiet about the identity of her now 10-year-old son Xander’s father. But she has been very outspoken — especially lately! — about not needing a partner to raise her son.

“It’s good to have strong women around a man,” the 44-year-old actress told Red magazine. “To teach him to respect women. He doesn’t have a male person in his life saying ‘don’t cry’ or ‘you throw like a girl.’ All those s-—-y things dads accidentally do.”

Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock, who is also a single mom with two adopted children, daughter Laila and son Louis. She feels like her family of three was always meant to be.

“When I look at Laila, there’s no doubt in my mind that she was supposed to be here,” she told People Magazine. “I can tell you absolutely, the exact right children came to me at the exact right time.”

Actress Charlize Theron also chose single motherhood by adopting, telling Australian magazine Madison in 2012, “My mother found [a letter I wrote]. It said, ‘Would you please take me to an orphanage so that I can go and adopt a baby?'” I always knew I would adopt. Always.”

Now the mom to adopted daughters Jackson and August, Theron said, “You know, I don’t think any mother aims to be a single mom. I didn’t wish for that, but it happened.”

LOS ANGELES – Kate Hudson has told Us Weekly magazine that she has a “great” dynamic with her fiancé and her exes to co-parent her three children.

In the article, the single mother said she isn’t afraid to use some “tough love techniques” to raise her three kids, but when it comes to co-parenting, she’s all about finding peace.

“She’s very loving and patient, but when she says ‘no’ it absolutely means ‘no,’” a source told the magazine. “The kids respect their mom very much as a result.”

The actress has admitted that her world at times feels a little “all over the place” with three kids from three different fathers. Figuring out how to coparent safely during the coronavirus pandemic provided an added level of difficulty.

“I wanna be like, ‘Yeah, it’s so great and … we’re figuring it out,’ but the reality is that there are days that are great, and there’s days that I have to remind myself to be grateful,” Hudson said during an appearance on Sunday Today With Willie Geist last year. “I never thought in a million years that I’d spend a year in one place. And when you have so many kids, sometimes you have those moments where you’re hiding in your bathroom going, ‘Please, please, get me out of here!’”

Although Hudson admitted her family is anything but traditional, she is proud that all of her children have their dads in their lives. Her own estranged father, Bill Hudson, left her mom, Goldie Hawn, when she and her siblings were very young.

LOS ANGELES – Halle Berry has teamed with the reality stars and “Property Brothers” hosts, Drew and Jonathan Scott, on “Celebrity IOU,” on Monday to surprise the woman whom she calls her “second mother” with a renovation of her 1920s-era home.

According to Yahoo Entertainment reporter Kylie Mar, Yvonne Sims, who was Berry’s fifth grade teacher, became a mentor to the actress and one of the most important people in her life.

“My mom was a single mom and so she worked a lot,” Berry said. “So my sister and I were very much latchkey kids. She sort of took me in under her wing. I have a white mother and she, being a Black woman, taught me about my culture.”

Berry explained that she went to a predominantly white school, so having Sims as a teacher, who was one of only two Black instructors at the time, was a gift that changed her life.

“I think she saw the need in me. She saw that I needed to be mentored and she stepped in,” said Berry, who is an Academy Award-winning actress and single mother to her two children.

Sims said, “Halle was eager to learn more about herself, being of mixed heritage.”

“She would take me to art museums, teach me about Black history, about my heritage, because it wasn’t really taught in schools. She just picked me up, you know, and quickly became more than a mentor, almost like another mother,” Berry said.
