Some outdoor fun, mother-child bonding time, and…business networking and development?

I grew up as a city girl with outdoor roots. I remember taking weekly nature walks with my mother in the vast city parks of Oakland California. My mother also raised me a single mother most of my life until share married my step father who is still in my life to this day. Prior to my step-father coming along I watched my mom work way harder than she should have had to just to give me moments like the opportunity we’ve created at Single Moms Planet for moms to explore the great outdoors with their children. Moments that every parent should be able to expereince.

Roughly 30% of households led by single mothers are subsisting under the poverty line, making single mothers and their children one of the most disadvantaged groups in the country

My mom and I were lucky enough to overcome the odds. But I never forgot what my mother sacrificed to give me the opportunities I have had. And I always knew we as a society could do so much better if single moms were given the resources to reach their full potential.

That’s why I founded Single Moms Planet along with co-founder Cole Patterson back in 2013 as a platform to help single moms help themselves. We do that by giving single moms the financial literacy education, networking opportunities, and affordable childcare they need to build their own thriving business or career. But just as importantly, we aim to provide opportunities for single moms to strengthen their relationship with their kids through meaningful bonding experiences and adventure.

That’s why since 2017, Single Moms Planet has hosted a 3-day camping retreat for moms and their kids every summer at beautiful Catalina Island’s Camp Emerald Bay.

Register by clicking here.

Are camping retreat is one of a kind as we offer land and water activities, including campfire stories, sailing, kayaking, row boats, archery, hiking, and kids playing. But it also includes a financial wellness lunch, networking workshops, and other opportunities for single moms to mingle and foster professional growth.

Enabling single mothers to succeed professionally requires recognition that family never takes a back seat. Giving single moms the tools they need to grow their business and level up their finances means giving them what they need to strengthen their relationship with their kids. As far as Single Moms Planet is concerned, financial success and a healthy, happy family go hand-in-hand.

Our Single Moms & Kids Camping Adventure offers a little slice of paradise where moms and kids can relax, have fun, enjoy a stunning natural setting, and, for the moms, share ideas and work together to bring their business to the next level.

Register by clicking here.

The 3 day, 2 night adventure will include sailing, kayaking, swimming, snorkeling, stargazing, and a leisurely rowboating experience sponsored by The Boy Scouts. Business-minded Moms will enjoy a Financial Wellness Lunch, our “Moms Get Paid” Retreat & Workshop sponsored by Chase Bank, plus opportunities to talk entrepreneurship, brand development, company expansion and more with business leaders and each other.

This year’s retreat takes place from June 29 – July 1 and is open to moms and their children ages 7-18. Kiddos must be attended by their mother or female guardian at all times. Admission is $500 for a mom and up to 2 children. You can sign up and find additional packages here.

I know as well as anyone that single moms and their kids deserve a little fun! Join me and Single Moms Planet for a few days of outdoor adventures and personal growth in a natural wonderland just 22 miles southwest of Los Angeles.

I’d love to see you there!

LOS ANGELES – Drew Barrymore spoke about the challenges she faced dating as a single mother during an episode last week of “The Drew Barrymore Show,” according to People magazine.

The actress said that she was set up with four eligible bachelors earlier this week on “The Howard Stern Show,” ultimately picking one as her match.

After reconnecting with the man, Clarke Thorell, the 47-year-old single mom, opened up about having “revelations” from the dating experience.

“None of the gentlemen, including yourself, have kids,” Barrymore said. “I have only dated, in the last few years, men who don’t have children. I want it clean, I don’t want to engage. I don’t think anyone’s meeting my kids, I don’t know if this is going anywhere. I realized something yesterday, Clarke, which is I might live on planet parent.”

Barrymore said that those who do and don’t have kids live on “different planets.” But she noted that “I feel like I’ve never gone on a date with anyone who actually understands the thing that’s the most all-consuming part of me.”

Barrymore, who shares two daughters with ex-husband Will Kopelman, spoke about exploring dating apps during her daytime talk show last month, revealing that she can go “years” without sex.

The topic came up after show contributor Ross Matthews spoke about Andrew Garfield being celibate for six months to prepare for his role in the 2016 film “Silence.”

“Well, I get abstaining from sex — I did that my entire 20s,” Mathews joked.

Barrymore added, “I was like, ‘What’s wrong with me that six months doesn’t seem like a very long time?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, so?’”

LOS ANGELES – The things that parents say to their children can either encourage and give them confidence, or lower their self-esteem and hold them back in life, according to a story reported by CNBC.

Author Margot Machol Bisnow, who wrote the article said that while she was researching her new book “Raising an Entrepreneur,” she spoke to 70 parents who raised highly successful adults about how they helped their kids achieve their dreams.

To her surprise, although it was an extremely diverse group — of races, religions, socioeconomic brackets and education — all the parents interviewed by Bisnow said they gave their kids the same messages every day – some were tough love, while others offered positive wisdom.

1. “I can’t do everything for you.”

These parents were the opposite of overprotective parents Instead, they set clear expectations and trusted their kids to take responsibility.

More importantly, they allowed natural consequences to take place. If their child didn’t study and failed a quiz, for instance, they used that as an opportunity for reflection and learning.

When Robert Stephens, a former executive at Best Buy, was three years old, he decided to take off all the doorknobs in the house. “My parents weren’t angry, they just told me I had to put them all back,” he said.

Stephens became the “fix-it” guy in his family. Then, at 24, he went on to start Geek Squad, a repair company that he later sold for $3 million.

2. “Do your best and be kind.”

All the entrepreneurs learned the importance of kindness since they were young.

Blake Mycoskie founded TOMS in 2006, which has since given away more than 95 million pairs of shoes. His company introduced the “one-for-one” business model, in which one needed item is given away for each item purchased.

His mother said that instilling compassion was an important part of bringing up her children: “We always adopted three or four families at Christmas through our church and bought clothes and toys that we delivered together to the kids.”

This was always their “family policy — to help those less fortunate,” she said. “The kids have seen this practiced their entire lives.”

3. “If something doesn’t work out, don’t be sad. It may turn out to be a good thing later on.”

The future entrepreneurs learned to win and lose gracefully, and to not obsess over mistakes. Pivoting and trying a new approach was also key.

Jonathan Neman tried to start a number of businesses in college, but none of them took off. He learned about what did work, and what didn’t. After college, he and his friends co-founded Sweetgreen, which now has over 900 locations around the country.

“Even if my dad didn’t think something was a good idea, he supported me,” Neman said. “My entrepreneurship journey is all about resilience. We keep going. We fail, we try and try again, we fail, we try and try and try.”

Original source www.nationwidecildrens.org

COVID-19 has been making headlines around the world. While COVID-19 originated in China, cases have been reported around the world – even in the United States.

As cases increase nationally and globally, you might be wondering if you should be worried. Below are answers to some frequently asked questions about COVID-19.

What Are Coronaviruses?

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses. Coronaviruses that infect people usually only cause mild respiratory disease, such as the common cold. However, at least two other coronaviruses have caused severe disease: Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV) coronavirus and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-Cov) coronavirus.

How is COVID-19 Transmitted?

The virus that causes COVID-19 is being passed from person to person through respiratory secretions – the snot and spit that may spew when you cough or sneeze. Experts think that the virus can also be spread by touching contaminated surfaces. For example, if you touch a doorknob or other surface that an infected person has touched or sneezed on then you touch your face, you could pick up the virus.

Should I Wear a Face Mask?

Wearing a face mask in public areas will not protect a healthy person from picking up COVID-19. In fact, wearing a face mask could increase the risk that you will touch your face with unwashed hands. However, if you are sick with a respiratory infection and are going to see the doctor, then wear a face mask to avoid spreading germs to others at the doctor’s office.

What Are the Symptoms?

Symptoms of infection include fever, cough and difficulty breathing. The severity of symptoms range from mild to severe. In some cases, patients have died after COVID-19 infection.

What Should a Person Experiencing Symptoms Do?

If you have been in an area affected by COVID-19 or in close contact with someone who is infected in the last two weeks and show symptoms of fever, cough or difficulty breathing, you should:

  • Seek medical care right away. Before you go to a doctor’s office or emergency room, call ahead and tell them about your recent travel or exposure and your symptoms.
  • Avoid contact with others.
  • Avoid traveling when sick.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.

How Can You Prevent COVID-19?

The best way to prevent infection is to avoid being exposed to the virus. There is currently no vaccine for the COVID-19 virus. The CDC recommends that people avoid all nonessential travel to China, Iran, Italy and South Korea. For the latest updates on travel recommendations visit: www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/index.html.

We are currently in peak cold and flu season. Everyday preventive actions can help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, including the flu and COVID-19.

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, and use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
  • Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

How Dangerous Is COVID-19?

Experts are still learning a lot about COVID-19. Older people and people with health conditions such as heart disease, lung disease and diabetes appear to be at higher risk for severe illness, according to the CDC.

The CDC and the World Health Organization are monitoring the situation closely. You can find regular updates about the latest travel warnings and health-related information here: www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html.

Create a schedule: School age children can learn to school themselves, as long as a caregiver has set the groundwork to help them succeed.

Use technology: Home-schooling does not mean that the parent is the teacher. Use a mix of free and paid sites like outschool.com, prodigygame.com and khanacademy.org.
