Some outdoor fun, mother-child bonding time, and…business networking and development?

I grew up as a city girl with outdoor roots. I remember taking weekly nature walks with my mother in the vast city parks of Oakland California. My mother also raised me a single mother most of my life until share married my step father who is still in my life to this day. Prior to my step-father coming along I watched my mom work way harder than she should have had to just to give me moments like the opportunity we’ve created at Single Moms Planet for moms to explore the great outdoors with their children. Moments that every parent should be able to expereince.

Roughly 30% of households led by single mothers are subsisting under the poverty line, making single mothers and their children one of the most disadvantaged groups in the country

My mom and I were lucky enough to overcome the odds. But I never forgot what my mother sacrificed to give me the opportunities I have had. And I always knew we as a society could do so much better if single moms were given the resources to reach their full potential.

That’s why I founded Single Moms Planet along with co-founder Cole Patterson back in 2013 as a platform to help single moms help themselves. We do that by giving single moms the financial literacy education, networking opportunities, and affordable childcare they need to build their own thriving business or career. But just as importantly, we aim to provide opportunities for single moms to strengthen their relationship with their kids through meaningful bonding experiences and adventure.

That’s why since 2017, Single Moms Planet has hosted a 3-day camping retreat for moms and their kids every summer at beautiful Catalina Island’s Camp Emerald Bay.

Register by clicking here.

Are camping retreat is one of a kind as we offer land and water activities, including campfire stories, sailing, kayaking, row boats, archery, hiking, and kids playing. But it also includes a financial wellness lunch, networking workshops, and other opportunities for single moms to mingle and foster professional growth.

Enabling single mothers to succeed professionally requires recognition that family never takes a back seat. Giving single moms the tools they need to grow their business and level up their finances means giving them what they need to strengthen their relationship with their kids. As far as Single Moms Planet is concerned, financial success and a healthy, happy family go hand-in-hand.

Our Single Moms & Kids Camping Adventure offers a little slice of paradise where moms and kids can relax, have fun, enjoy a stunning natural setting, and, for the moms, share ideas and work together to bring their business to the next level.

Register by clicking here.

The 3 day, 2 night adventure will include sailing, kayaking, swimming, snorkeling, stargazing, and a leisurely rowboating experience sponsored by The Boy Scouts. Business-minded Moms will enjoy a Financial Wellness Lunch, our “Moms Get Paid” Retreat & Workshop sponsored by Chase Bank, plus opportunities to talk entrepreneurship, brand development, company expansion and more with business leaders and each other.

This year’s retreat takes place from June 29 – July 1 and is open to moms and their children ages 7-18. Kiddos must be attended by their mother or female guardian at all times. Admission is $500 for a mom and up to 2 children. You can sign up and find additional packages here.

I know as well as anyone that single moms and their kids deserve a little fun! Join me and Single Moms Planet for a few days of outdoor adventures and personal growth in a natural wonderland just 22 miles southwest of Los Angeles.

I’d love to see you there!

By Dr. Wendy T. Talley, LCSW September 11, 2023

As parents, one of our most important roles is to guide our children through life’s challenging moments. One such moment in recent history is the tragic events of September 11, 2001, commonly known as 9/11. Discussing this sensitive topic with your child is challenging but essential for their emotional well-being. In this blog, we’ll explore five ways you can speak with your child about 9/11 and provide them with the support they need to navigate these complex emotions.

1. Age-Appropriate Communication
The first and most crucial step in discussing 9/11 with your child is considering their age and maturity level. Younger children may not have the emotional capacity to comprehend the full extent of the events, while older children may require more detailed information. Here’s how to  adapt your communication:

– For younger children (under 7): Keep the conversation simple and age-appropriate. Use language they can understand and focus on bravery, kindness, and resilience themes. Explain that something sad happened, but people came together to help each other.
– For middle childhood (7-12): Offer a more detailed but simplified version of the events, emphasizing the heroism of first responders and the nation’s unity in the face of adversity. Encourage questions and provide honest but gentle answers.
– For teenagers: Engage in open, candid discussions about 9/11, allowing them to freely express their thoughts and emotions. Encourage critical thinking and help them explore the broader societal implications of the event.

2. Create a Safe and Open Environment
Create a safe and open environment to ensure your child feels comfortable discussing 9/11 with you. Find a quiet and private space where they can freely express their thoughts and emotions. Reassure them that their feelings are valid and their questions are welcome. Please encourage them to share their concerns without fear of judgment or reprisal.

3. Use Open-Ended Questions

Engaging your child in meaningful conversations about 9/11 requires asking open-ended questions. Instead of asking yes-or-no questions like, “Are you okay?” or “Did you understand everything?” try asking:

– “Can you tell me how you’re feeling about what you heard about 9/11?”
– “What do you think about the way people helped each other during that time?”
– “Is there anything specific you’d like to know or discuss about 9/11?”

Open-ended questions invite your child to express themselves more fully and can lead to more profound conversations.

4. Provide Reassurance and Support
Reassurance and emotional support are crucial when discussing traumatic events with your child. Reiterate that they are safe, loved, and cared for. Let them know it’s normal to experience a range of emotions, such as sadness, fear, or confusion. Emphasize that you are there to listen, support, and help them process their feelings.

5. Share Stories of Resilience and Unity
While it’s essential to acknowledge the tragedy of 9/11, it’s equally important to highlight stories of resilience, heroism, and unity. Share stories of people coming together, helping each other, and rebuilding after the attacks. These stories can inspire hope and demonstrate the strength of the human spirit.

Conclusion:
Discussing 9/11 with your child is a challenging but necessary conversation to help them process their emotions and understand a significant historical moment. By adapting your communication to their age, creating a safe and open environment, asking open-ended questions, providing reassurance and support, and sharing stories of resilience, you can guide your child through this sensitive topic while promoting their emotional well-being. Remember that every child is unique; the key is to be empathetic, patient, and responsive to their needs throughout the conversation and beyond.

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Cincinnati Bengals safety Jessie Bates held his 3rd annual Single Mother’s Initiative last weekend, where he partnered with Bigger Than Sneakers, Inc. to treat single moms and their kids in the Cincinnati area to a few days of festivities, according to SI.com.

“Every year we have been able to make an impact, and this year we’ve got some extra events planned to make it even bigger. It’s something that is incredibly important to me,” he said.

Having grown up in a single mother household with his older sister, younger brother, and step siblings in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Bates has been passionate in his support of single moms over the years. Much of it comes from having seen the sacrifices his mother, Theresa, made, like working two jobs to support his family.

His Single Mother’s Initiative is his way of giving back to those who have experiences similar situations to those he has growing up.

The event began with a Christmas shopping spree for the children. The event was followed on Friday with a trip to the movie theater for the kids, while the mothers had dinner out together. Saturday involved haircuts and miniature golfing at TopGolf, where ‘Who Dey,’ the Bengals’ mascot, joined them too.

On Sunday, the group attended the Bengals-Browns game in a private suite, had an in-game visit from the Ben-Gal cheerleaders, and later granted post-game field access to meet Bates after the game.

The group cheered as they saw the Bengals secure their fifth-straight win and Bates grab a pivotal 4th quarter interception. Bates received a game ball for his performance.

To cap the event, Bates provided limousine transportation for the children and mothers to take them around town.
